Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Rude Customer

So there are a lot of nice people in the world. I have had many people offer to help me, hold the door, etc. But every now and then you get some people who must have just woken up on the wrong side of the bed that morning.

I was in the Dollar Store, at the cash, paying for my items. Now, I am clearly interacting with the cashier and can obviously communicate myself. It was then that I heard a voice behind me.

“Can she move?” a lady says to my mother, who is beside me. Very blunt, very rude. Yes, there isn’t much room to get around me, but it would have been the same scenario had I had a cart. She didn’t address me, or even acknowledge me whatsoever. So my mom had the perfect line back to her.

“I don’t know. Maybe you should politely ask her.”

The lady was fuming! I finished up and adjusted my chair so she could get through. She just brushed by in a huff. Like, what was that for?

On my way out a very kind gentleman held the door for me and wished me a good day. So you get both types.  It’s always better to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. That’s why I like to keep this blog positive. It’s not hard to be nice to other people. Even if you are having a bad day, remember that it isn’t their fault. Just a pointer, (not trying to preach) always address a disabled person themselves first rather than automatically addressing their caregiver. Don’t assume they can’t communicate unless you know otherwise.

I despise people who use rudeness and entitlement as tools in communication. You are a much better human than me. I can’t keep quiet when I see someone acting in that manner. I know it’s wrong but I match the energy I see and I ratchet it up a few notches. Well a lot of notches. Keep fighting Sara
