Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Where I’ve been

Blog

It sucks, but not everywhere you go is accessible for someone with a mobility aid such as a wheelchair. Here I will document a few places who are trying their best to make themselves more wheelchair-friendly. I may also mention some fails who haven’t done a great job (without shaming anyone).  Not everything is perfect, but some people are doing their best with what is in the scope of possible. Remember, often businesses don’t own the building they are in and can only make so many accommodations.  I’d like to say it’s the thought that counts, but that’s not good enough. Only awareness will create real change! I will also keep you up to date on what I and the committees I am on are doing to improve accessibility!

They had a beautiful ramp going in. There was no actuator on the door, but it was very light and easy to…

  • My New Chair: Felix

A momentous occasion yesterday! I received and was fitted for my brand new wheelchair! I have named him Felix, after the potion Felix Felicis in Harry Potter. This potion is said to bring good luck. The drinker can do no wrong as long as its effects last. I am hoping this chair will bring me…

On Friday, January 31st, I was invited and had the opportunity to participate in a panel for the Board and Senior Leadership Retreat Engagement session with youth and families for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), where I sit on the Accessibility Committee. What a great discussion on how to involve patients and families…

  • Baking with the Boss

A little flashback to 2014, my early wheelchair days. A bit of a reflection on an important interaction I had. So my reason for being in a chair is due to complications from childhood cancer treatment. As many are aware, when you have a life-threatening disease as a child under 18 you are granted a…

  • Alight at Night

Upper Canada Village does it again! The village is beautiful when it is all lit up for Christmas, and many people love to go to see the lights. The event is called the Alight at Night Festival. Unfortunately, in the winter, in a chair, this can be difficult. Yet, Upper Canada Village has a solution.…
