Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Where I’ve been

Blog

It sucks, but not everywhere you go is accessible for someone with a mobility aid such as a wheelchair. Here I will document a few places who are trying their best to make themselves more wheelchair-friendly. I may also mention some fails who haven’t done a great job (without shaming anyone).  Not everything is perfect, but some people are doing their best with what is in the scope of possible. Remember, often businesses don’t own the building they are in and can only make so many accommodations.  I’d like to say it’s the thought that counts, but that’s not good enough. Only awareness will create real change! I will also keep you up to date on what I and the committees I am on are doing to improve accessibility!

  • Halloween

Spent Halloween night this year handing out candy at Bob Foster’s ( a fellow Lions Club member) house. We faced the not-so-great weather in a little tarp area set up to keep us dry, complete with a smoking cauldron of witches brew and strobe lights for effect. We chose this location because it was wheelchair…

  • Halloween Haunt at Wonderland

What better way to get ready for Halloween than a trip to Halloween Haunt at Canada’s Wonderland? I went with one of my best friends, Chris (you may know him as this website’s awesome designer). We drove up this past weekend. We got really lucky with the weather. Though it poured on the way there,…

  • Dixon’s General Store

It may seem like it’s in the middle of nowhere, but a trip to Dixon’s General Store in Algonquin, Ontario is worth the drive. The owner has put a lot of work into making this establishment as accessible as can be to everyone. For starters, there is a nice, wide wheelchair parking spot right out…

  • C’est Tout Bakery and Bistro

Always looking for a nice place to grab lunch. A great option is C’est Tout Bakery and Bistro in Smiths Falls Ontario. It is on the main drag, where the sidewalks have nice curb cuts due to recent construction work.  At the side of the building there is a lovely ramp. The slope is nice…

Credit to Taylor Swift for the music.

  • Rideau Carleton Raceway

Before anyone accuses me of a gambling problem, I promise I don’t go to the track that often, but I recently did visit the Rideau Carleton Raceway south of Ottawa. I had a blast, and I love going there, but I’m not going to lie, I continue to be disappointed in the accessibility of the…

I’m Sarah!

Welcome to Rolling with Sarah! I am a 26-year-old wheelchair user from Merrickville, Ontario. Throughout my life, I have encountered both amazing accessibility and impossible to believe barriers On this site, I will document my journey as a person with a disability. My highs, my lows, and everything in between. I will recognize accessibility efforts by others, as well as what I am doing to improve accessibility myself. Roll along with me!
