So, there is a lot of controversy on when people call wheelchair users “inspirational”. Many get offended by this. I mean, we are essentially trying to live our daily lives. We are doing things like getting groceries or wheeling down the street to do errands, and for that we are made out to be heroes. We aren’t changing the world with these activities; we are getting milk. I can see how this could be kind of exasperating and a tiny bit annoying for some. But I also see a different side to this.
Yes, we are doing everyday activities, and we aren’t superheroes for doing so. But in a way, it can be inspirational. When people are struggling for whatever reason, they can sometimes find inspiration by looking at others who are dealing with challenges too. They know how much effort it can take for us to do a “simple” daily routine. As many know, as a wheelchair user getting down the street in the snowy winter to go grab some milk is not an easy task. These everyday challenges may help provide another perspective for others. They think “well if they can do it, so can I”.
It is this that they find inspiring. When they see us out in the world being independent, they see strength. This is what they find inspiring. While it may not seem like much to us, it helps others.
I think it is important to reflect on others’ perspectives. Wheelchair users are amazing, and we should be celebrated. This is something to consider the next time you are dubbed “an inspiration” as a wheelchair user. Perhaps people see that they too can do difficult things. Being called inspirational isn’t always a negative.
