What I really wanted to do from the get go was make a difference in my own (very inaccessible, but historic) town. I looked around at what our community already had to offer and found the Lions Club. They were already this amazing organization giving so much to the community, and I knew their values would line up with what I was trying to do, so both my mother and I joined. Upon becoming a member, I founded the Lion’s own accessibility committee. The reception was great and I am happy to say it already has several valuable members who are keen to make change. Our first project was to create an accessibility checklist to use for our own events as well as other local organizations to use when planning events. Sometimes a little reminder comes in handy to make sure an event is inclusive to all Obviously the checklist can’t cover everything, and some items are impossible in certain situations, but the goal is to make people stop and think.
The Lions Club accessibility committee just attained new signage to create accessible pick-up and drop-off zones for the mobility impaired at local events. The hope is to create a safe space to let someone stop and safely let their passenger out before going to find a place to park. We also have signage to use indoors to reserve and identify accessible seats or sections. We will encourage several local organizations to take advantage of this signage.
