Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Where I’ve been

Blog

It sucks, but not everywhere you go is accessible for someone with a mobility aid such as a wheelchair. Here I will document a few places who are trying their best to make themselves more wheelchair-friendly. I may also mention some fails who haven’t done a great job (without shaming anyone).  Not everything is perfect, but some people are doing their best with what is in the scope of possible. Remember, often businesses don’t own the building they are in and can only make so many accommodations.  I’d like to say it’s the thought that counts, but that’s not good enough. Only awareness will create real change! I will also keep you up to date on what I and the committees I am on are doing to improve accessibility!

  • First Button

I’m going to kick this section off with a post about my first time being an accessibility advocate. Due to complications in my health from childhood cancer treatment,  I became wheelchair bound. I went to go to the medical day unit in the children’s hospital one day on my own. When I went to open…

  • Accessible Table

Awesome example of inclusive design. Modern and attractive looking while still allowing someone in a wheelchair a place at the table (pun intended 🙂 )

  • Hard Stones Grill

Found another nice place to eat! The Hard Stones Grill in Kemptville, Ontario is reasonably accessible. To start, there are several accessible parking spots in the front and the curb to get there goes down. When you arrive at the entrance, there are actuators on every door. Some seats there is a step up, but…

  • Woodbine Raceway

Off to the races! I recently took a trip to Woodbine Raceway in Toronto. No, I didn’t strike it rich, but I sure did have a good time. I love picking the horses based on funny names and just generally having fun. I was majorly impressed by the accessibility. To start with, when we pulled…

  • Rogers Centre

Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd! I recently went to see our Toronto Blue Jays face off against the St. Louis Cardinals at the Rogers Centre. We don’t drive directly to the park, but for those who do, I did notice there was an accessible drop-off/ pick-up zone.…

  • Limerick Forest

Everyone loves nature! No better way to spend a day than a roll in the woods. I am actually able to do so at Limerick Forests Chalet Trails. They have trails that someone like me (in a chair) can take and experience the great outdoors.  Behind the chalet, there are 3 trails marked in blue…

I’m Sarah!

Welcome to Rolling with Sarah! I am a 26-year-old wheelchair user from Merrickville, Ontario. Throughout my life, I have encountered both amazing accessibility and impossible to believe barriers On this site, I will document my journey as a person with a disability. My highs, my lows, and everything in between. I will recognize accessibility efforts by others, as well as what I am doing to improve accessibility myself. Roll along with me!
