Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Where I’ve been

Blog

It sucks, but not everywhere you go is accessible for someone with a mobility aid such as a wheelchair. Here I will document a few places who are trying their best to make themselves more wheelchair-friendly. I may also mention some fails who haven’t done a great job (without shaming anyone).  Not everything is perfect, but some people are doing their best with what is in the scope of possible. Remember, often businesses don’t own the building they are in and can only make so many accommodations.  I’d like to say it’s the thought that counts, but that’s not good enough. Only awareness will create real change! I will also keep you up to date on what I and the committees I am on are doing to improve accessibility!

  • Canadian Tire Centre: Brad Paisley

I recently saw Brad Paisley live at the Canadian Tire Centre. I went with my sister and her boyfriend. So here is the accessibility scoop. When we arrived, the very front parking lot by the doors was reserved for accessible parking. All of the spots were extra wide. It cost a fair amount to park…

  • Course Completion: Free Elf!

I recently completed my college program in Medical Office Assistant at Centennial College. I feel very proud. I will graduate with honours. As a special surprise, my sister and her boyfriend took me to the Brad Paisley concert. It was so much fun! He didn’t do my favourite Christmas song (James Penguin) but it was…

  • Let It Snow? No Thanks

Some people love snow. It is beautiful, I get that. I however, am not one of those people. Let me tell you why. I actually find snow, especially heavy snow, quite depressing. To me, it means a loss of independence. I can’t go outside and push myself. First of all, the wheels fill up with…

  • Merrickville Dentistry: New Accessibility Features

Merrickville Dentistry never cease to impress me! Check out the sign they had posted at their door at the top of the ramp. It says “Please ring bell for assistance with accessibility. We have a ramp to place on the threshold.” And then they showed me the threshold ramp they had had custom made. Way…

  • International Day of Persons With Disabilities CHEO Panel

On December 3rd we celebrated International Day of Persons With Disabilities. I was honoured to be a part of a panel at CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) along with several other amazing advocates. We had a great discussion on what these commemorative days mean to us and leadership in accessibility. Lots of valuable insights.…

  • Calgary Part 4: Flight Home

Come November 4th, it was time to fly home. We have to get up early to catch a cab at 6:3- am! The hotel ordered us an accessible cab this time. Man, how easy it was! It was a converted Toyota Sienna minivan. The back opened and out came a ramp. I rolled right up…
