Welcome to my accessibility journey!

It may seem like it’s in the middle of nowhere, but a trip to Dixon’s General Store in Algonquin, Ontario is worth the drive. The owner has put a lot of work into making this establishment as accessible as can be to everyone. For starters, there is a nice, wide wheelchair parking spot right out front. The front door has a working actuator at the perfect height for someone in a chair. There is no pesky threshold to get stuck on when entering the store. I was able to get in 100% on my own with no help from my caregiver at all. Once inside, the aisles were nice and wide. I had fun perusing the unique local products and goodies they had for sale. Got to try some yummy treats. Although I did not sit down for lunch, my caregivers have been previously and assure me the food is delicious. The dining room had plenty of space to maneuver and the chairs at the tables could all be easily removed to make room for a wheelchair. The staff was lovely and were happy to inform me about how important accessibility is to this store. It’s nice to see a business take accessibility so seriously. I will be back!

I’m Sarah!

Welcome to Rolling with Sarah! I am a 26-year-old wheelchair user from Merrickville, Ontario. Throughout my life, I have encountered both amazing accessibility and impossible to believe barriers On this site, I will document my journey as a person with a disability. My highs, my lows, and everything in between. I will recognize accessibility efforts by others, as well as what I am doing to improve accessibility myself. Roll along with me!
