Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Ever been in the mood for a freshly baked delicacy? I know I am a sucker for a good treat! My craving was satisfied on a beautiful summer afternoon at Tait’s Bakery in Brockville, Ontario ( also called Tait’s Fresh Start). Although there was no actuator on the door, I was able to get into the store easily with a little help from my companion. There was no extra step or threshold so the roll in was smooth. There aren’t many businesses downtown that don’t have a step up to get inside, so this was refreshing.  The first “step” to getting in is no step at all!

Once inside the smell of baked goods stimulates your senses. It was so sweet and cinnamony…yummy. I got a delicious cream puff and coffee. The staff was kind and accommodating. The actual space inside was large and there were plenty of seats to choose from with removable chairs to make space for the wheelchair. There was plenty of room to navigate and look at the delicious products and the turn radius was huge.

A major plus was that the bathrooms were also wheelchair  accessible! There was a wheelchair symbol on the door and a stall wide enough to comfortably get into. The sink, though a little high, had space to roll right up to so you could get close enough to wash your hands.

I enjoyed my little outing to this Brockville gem and will definitely be a returning customer. Just be sure to bring a friend to help open the door. Treats are better when shared anyway so it’s not the biggest inconvenience in the world.  Thumbs up from me!

I’m Sarah!

Welcome to Rolling with Sarah! I am a 26-year-old wheelchair user from Merrickville, Ontario. Throughout my life, I have encountered both amazing accessibility and impossible to believe barriers On this site, I will document my journey as a person with a disability. My highs, my lows, and everything in between. I will recognize accessibility efforts by others, as well as what I am doing to improve accessibility myself. Roll along with me!
