Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Alight at Night

Upper Canada Village does it again! The village is beautiful when it is all lit up for Christmas, and many people love to go to see the lights. The event is called the Alight at Night Festival. Unfortunately, in the winter, in a chair, this can be difficult. Yet, Upper Canada Village has a solution.

They have a few nights that they call “Accessibility Nights”. On those nights, the village is closed to all but those who have accessibility tickets. Depending on your timeslot (which are every half hour), your family can stay in your car and join a lineup. At the front of the lineup an Upper Canada vehicle leads the pack. You follow them as you drive through a magical tour of the village. The pace is nice and slow so you get a chance to see everything and take plenty of pictures. Personally, my favourite part is seeing how gorgeous the church looks. They even have lights that “dance” to the Christmas music. I also love how the ramps are all lit up too, making them stand out wonderfully instead of hiding them.

I love how they consider people who may not be able to walk through. The village to see the lights. This is a Christmas tradition my family does as I am able to enjoy it along with everyone else. Tickets are available every year on Upper Canada Village’s website, but be sure to order early because they only have so many slots which can only accommodate so many cars, so space can get limited.

I’m Sarah!

Welcome to Rolling with Sarah! I am a 26-year-old wheelchair user from Merrickville, Ontario. Throughout my life, I have encountered both amazing accessibility and impossible to believe barriers On this site, I will document my journey as a person with a disability. My highs, my lows, and everything in between. I will recognize accessibility efforts by others, as well as what I am doing to improve accessibility myself. Roll along with me!
