Welcome to my accessibility journey!

Everyone loves nature! No better way to spend a day than a roll in the woods. I am actually able to do so at Limerick Forests Chalet Trails. They have trails that someone like me (in a chair) can take and experience the great outdoors.  Behind the chalet, there are 3 trails marked in blue on the maps that are accessible. 2 include accessible viewing platforms. The terrain is packed gravel. Due to a wrist injury, I had a little help in the form of someone pushing me in my manual chair, but other than some pine needles and rocks, it was definitely navigable. I am pretty confident I could manage it on my own in my Travel Buddy Aerolux chair.  The viewing deck was really impressive. In addition to the top viewing deck, there is also an accessible one on ground level with the same spectacular views of the wetlands. The railing was well positioned so I could see both over and under it. I was lucky enough to count 2 Sandhill cranes, 3 Trumpeter swans, 2 Canada geese and 18 ducks! Not to mention the cute minnows swimming below. Reminder: bring binoculars! To top things off, the team at Limerick is in the process of creating an accessible bathroom on site for when “nature calls”, lol. The chalet building does have a ramp going in, but unfortunately no button, yet  That is one of the only thing they could improve upon. The crew at Limerick should be proud of the sanctuary they have created that can be inclusively enjoyed.

I’m Sarah!

Welcome to Rolling with Sarah! I am a 26-year-old wheelchair user from Merrickville, Ontario. Throughout my life, I have encountered both amazing accessibility and impossible to believe barriers On this site, I will document my journey as a person with a disability. My highs, my lows, and everything in between. I will recognize accessibility efforts by others, as well as what I am doing to improve accessibility myself. Roll along with me!
